Guy Richards Smit
Guy Richards Smit (b. 1970, NYC) is a painter, video artist, performer, and musician whose work has been featured at venues such as the Museum of Modern Art (NYC), the Hirshhorn Museum (Washington, DC), and the Pompidou Center (Paris, France). Recent solo exhibitions include the SPRING/BREAK Art Show (curated by Carol Bove), Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center (Buffalo, NY) and Charlie James Gallery (Los Angeles).
Guy Richards Smit’s art traverses a wide range of cultural forms to explore themes of narcissism, desire, power and failure. Preferring to insinuate himself into genres rather than appropriate work, he spent two years submitting his own gag-cartoons to The New Yorker. The storied magazine began publishing his cartoons in February of 2022.
He has also toured internationally as the lead singer and songwriter of the altrock band Maxi Geil! & PlayColt and completed a 5-episode “sitcom” titled The Grossmalerman Show (Directed by Joshua White of Seinfeld fame).
